As a scientist who's focus has been human physiology and pathophysiology
and as an actual WOMAN who has breastfed two children I found your article RIDICULOUS
and seriously misinformed!
Firstly: Encouraging women to breastfeed is very important, formula IS bad
for your child. Breastfeeding decreases risk of cancer, obesity, certain autoimmune
Disorders and SIDS in children, in addition it decreases the risk of breastcancer
in the mother.
Secondly: YES YES YES the babies mouth absolutely does communicate dietary need
via enzyme content in the saliva. It's not magic,
It's not telepathy, IT IS SCIENCE!
Thirdly: Bottle feeding is more bloody work by far I breast fed my first for three years
And my current is still exclusively breastfed at age 10 months. Being a parent is not easy
and when I chose to have children I chose to give them the best. It is such a short period
Of your life that if you cannot suck it up and do it you may not be prepared for the job.
Fourthly: Infant mortality rates in pre formula days were also PRE ANTIBIOTIC and PRE VACCINE, pre modern health care days As a matter of fact milk sharing was a much more common thing in those times.
I commend the nurses that attempt to encourage women to do the right things for the worlds babies!

The only points I agree with are
1. the drivers being poor, 1 in 2 seem to not know the difference between stop, yield and merge, and
2. the lights need to be timed, and made to flash amber after rush hour in some cases.
- Kings college and regent was only difficult to get out of at 8am and 5pm, it could be flashing amber 22 hours of the day. Same for Mongomery and Regent, whoever programed the hair trigger traffic sensor there had no concern for the proportion of traffic on regent verse the 1 car turning, or even worse, someone that just cut over the sensor while turning left.

I'm all for the crazy traffic circles and intersections. The city doesn't have an infinite budget and circles make sense on so many levels. I don't care if lanes aren't properly marked, I just wish people would turn on their blinkers as soon as they're thinking about turning or changing lanes.

Oliver D has a good point - could get around that by taking multiple photos, and having a reference point in the image.
There is a bigger problem than just the still images...

The ENTIRE congestion thing is the fault of 40 years of HORRIBLE city planning in Fredericton.

Congestion tax/fees are supposed to encourage alternate methods of travel to the downtown core. Fredericton has been so horribly planned for and designed, that there are no alternate routes for all of us that HAVE to drive to work. Buses do NOT run 15 on the 15 24 hours a day. There are NO large scale FREE Park & Ride parking lots on the north side or south. The buses ONLY go to the city limits and only in a few VERY specific locations.

Furthermore, the policies and property tax rates of Fredericton have caused the larger percentage of the regional population to live OUTSIDE the city limits. This has the effect of greatly reducing the # of people that are contributing to city taxes.

No, if you want to solve these issues, the city and the province (due to many from outside the municipality using it) need to build a third river crossing and NOW. All of this waiting has caused the approaches on the south side of the river at Prospect west to be eaten up by developers. The chances of having a properly located 3rd crossing are diminishing FAST.

Combine the above with the fact that the Princess Margaret should have been torn down and had a 4-lane modern upgrade put in its stead and you have a total recipe for traffic disaster in this city.

As though that was not all enough, research into the mess that is the Westmorland Bridge will show that it was NOT the best location and was fought against by the denizens of Fredericton on several occasions. Just more proof to the 40 years of horrible planning in Fredericton.

The GMA gets it all nearly right and they are THREE municipalities (Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe). This area is essentially ONE and it has screwed it up ever since amalgamation in 1973.

P.S. -- And the REALLY ranty part of me wants to place the majority of the remaining possible blame on the beyond debate WORST BUNCH OF DRIVERS IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE!!!! How can they all get so much wrong driving is such a small and simple city??? I have been driving for 20 years and have driven in many of the very largest cities in North America and seriously, Fredericton is HORRIBLE considering the size and simplicity.
